From Humans to Doomsday Knights: Chapter Seven

As soon as the demons claws pierced his armor, a message appeared on the suits screen in front of his eyes, “CRITICAL ORGAN DAMAGE! EXTERNAL BLOCKAGE DETECTED, ATEMPT TO REPAIR UNSUCCESSFUL” Blood dripped from his back and chest to the tip of the demons claws, he was now hundreds of meters in the air where he could see the fine curve on the planets horizon. Despite his pain, feeling that had become all too prevalent and usual in the last years, he briefly focused on the decaying buildings and streets that where now reclaimed by nature, last reminder of human kind. At his command a wave of millions of nanobots materialized a new sword in his right hand as the previous one had been ripped of his hands by the force of the demon pulling him into the air. Finely tweaked, the swords alloy was one of the only known materials capable of piercing demon flesh and muscle. With a painful twist to his left, he stabbed the demons leg with all the strength he could harness in that precarious situation. At first it felt like hitting a sturdy steel plate, but after penetrating the thick skin layer it was like cutting butter with a red hot knife. The creature let out a loud deep shriek that rattled the air tens of meters away and instantly unclenched its paw freeing him from its grasp. Gravity took hold of him and with its characteristic acceleration reeled him back to the ground. The nanobots now that the clog was cleared, infiltrated his body through the pores in his skin and meticulously reconstructed the fatally wounded organs.

W…wait…the only word his hurt body allowed him to faintly say, the pain on his right side forbid him of lifting his right hand and protecting himself from the ferocious blow the young woman was building up. Alex heard the plea at mid swing, the axe was past the point of no return, the force of the blow, imprinted with all her might would be unable to be stopped without causing any serious damage. Her eyes widened in fear, as the thought of murdering another living being and not one of those creatures filled her mind. He closed his eyes and waited to at least partially feel the fatal blow that was headed his way, less than a second later he felt a sharp pain emanating from his left ear. Alex had managed to move the axe ever so slightly to her right, but enough to miss his head. A loud clank rattled the wall, as she instantly let go of the axe and threw herself on her back, she kicked herself a few steps back, heart racing hard and fast and eyes wide open in disbelief and fear, feelings that had become all too familiar in the past twenty four hours. FUCK, FUCK, FUCK! I’m so sorry, I didn’t…I didn’t, FUCK! Alex shouted with her uncommon deep voice as he took her hair into her hands.

He quickly opened his eyes and tried to crawl away, you…you almost fucking KILLED me, what the fuck is your problem?!?! he blurted angrily as his working hand found its way to the freshly cut ear. As the hand returned to his line of sight he saw it was tainted with red, not much but it was a brand new wound, hoo-fucking-ray he thought to himself. You FUCKING LUNATIC!! he continued as the adrenaline of the blow now became a profound rage. I’m so sorry, I…I thought you were one of those…things Alex stammered. FUCK YOU! YOU CRAZY BITCH! he yelled taking hold of the anger that now possessed him. Alex now hugged her knees face buried deep in her jeans and started crying. I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, I never meant to…I’m so sorry… she answered as a crescendo of sobs slowly filled the place and were amplified by the echo the metal sheets in the ceiling bounced back. His working arm held his weight against the floor, as his shivering body battled the pain so he could assess the situation and create a plan in case the lass represented any further danger.

The rage slowly started fading as he saw Alex desperately sobbing, he soon realized that if she represented any danger he would already be dead, in his state, he would not have had the slightest chance of survival. Alex had managed to control her sobbing and quietly wept a few steps to his left. Listen…I didn’t mean to say those things, you scared me there for a second, I don’t even know what the hell crossed my mind…I’m Joe. She lifted her face from her knees, her face was swollen and her eyes were red from the endless streams of tears that had just swarmed her eyes. She cleaned her face with her hands and her nose with her filthy shirt, not even in the messiest shift with overflowed bioreactors had her clothes looked so bad. I’m sorry, I thought you were one of those…things…I don’t know what the fuck is going on, so much blood…they chased me… Alex replied with her gaze now directed at Joe, in that characteristic post-cry blocked up nose voice. I don’t know what’s going on either, I was in a car accident and woke to a mangled woman trying to…to fucking take a bite off me, this is the only place I could find Joe continued while meticulously examining Alex.

As his eyes scanned her top to bottom, the first thought that returned to his mind, was “wow she’s damn cute”, all the pain, all the gore, the last 24 hours erased as one of the most basic human instincts had just kicked in. One of the mysteries of the male human brain, his arm was almost certainly broken, the glass cuts stung all over his body and his chest could barely stand the pain that came from each breath, but his mind could only see one thing, a healthy female mate. For fucks sake, really, that’s all you can think of right now, you fucking dumbass he said to himself still examining her. I’m Alex, I work…here, I heard an explosion and thought one of the bioreactors had malfunctioned, a few moments later one of those things got into my house and chased after me, he…it…it couldn’t have been alive, there was so much…blood, she dimly said as the gory scene that had taken place at her house mere hours ago played vividly on her mind. I didn’t know where else to go, I thought I would find someone here that could help me, someone that could tell me what the fuck was going on, I did find them, my boss…Alfred, she paused an inhaled deeply as the scene from her house had now been abruptly switched the scene of Alfred mauling on Luis’s face.

What the fuck should we do now? Alex asked softly, her gaze fixed on Joe, but going through him and lost in an endless stream of thoughts that now saturated her mind. We should probably ge…the unfinished sentence quickly evaporated into the air as the air suddenly turned cold, inexplicably cold, as if the warm summer weather had, in a second, become a cold winter night. The air stood completely still, it was as if the place had been sealed in vacuum, the air going through the steel sheets in the ceiling and rattling the doors had now vanished. A feeling of the most pure, deep and mysterious fear now filled Joe’s body, he could see that Alex could sense it too, her eyes were now completely open, staring back at him. W..w…w…what the fuck is that? Do…do you feel it too? Joe whispered to Alex now trembling from the bizarre feeling of fear. Alex quickly ran to Joe’s side and sat down beside him, grabbing his arm tightly and showing him the exact same feeling had taken hold of her. From the small wall they rested upon, they could see the entirety of the reactor room, but they could not pinpoint the reason or the location that emanated that urge to feel so deeply afraid. The absence of sound was swiftly broken by a piercing shriek and a deep growl that came from somewhere outside the factory, somewhere very close by…too close.
